The Items That Must Be Removed Determine The Cost of Asbestos Removal

By Charles Wallace

Asbestos removal costs vary a lot. One of the things impacting on the cost is the materials that need to be removed.

Asbestos-containing materials have been generally used in new constructions for many years. There are some rules in place concerning new materials that might or might not contain the substance, but the pollutant remains a difficulty.

Flame resistance has long been the major advantage of asbestos-containing materials. Due to that, the compound can be found in any area where the specter of fire was considered during construction of the building.

Items that may contain asbestos include:

Flooring tiles

Interior bricks

Outside paint

Ceiling tiles

Insulation

Plaster

Pipes

Ductwork

Ornamental walls

Acoustic walls and ceilings

Some items aren't a risk unless the building is being demolished. For example, the miniscule fibers present in bricks and ceramic tiles wouldn't be released unless they were ground to dust.

Taking a look at the list above also explains why the cost for asbestos removal can vary so much. Some of these materials are more difficult to handle safely than others and some offer disposal challenges the others do not present.

Even then there might be no risk if the temperatures used during manufacturing were very high. One of the techniques for rendering the material safe is to heat it at high temperatures to turn it into glass.

Other items in a building are awfully dangerous. Insulation and spray-on plaster used for decorating walls and ceilings are examples. Simply brushing up against those surfaces can release the material.

Asbestos removal prices can be high when a building includes a number of questionable items. A combination of removing the items or encompassing them may be mandatory.

Unless pipes and ductwork must be replaced, it could be less costly to cover them with a material that ensures the dangerous fibers won't become airborne. A material called lag fabric as an example can often be used to cover pipes and other items that've been lined with the substance.

Asbestos removal prices are as high as they are for simple explanations. Companies that specialize in removing the material must purchase special hardware to guard their employees.

Specialized vacuum systems have to be used to wash up when the work is done. Only class H vacuums may be employed with the intention. Any other type will shoot the fibers back out into the air.

Curtains of polyethylene film have to be used to seal off areas in which asbestos-containing materials are being removed. Even the rolls of duct tape needed to secure the areas are costly.

The asbestos removal costs are low in comparison to the price of treating health issues due to the material. Without regard for how much you must pay, it is money spent wisely.
